Wipeout 2048 Game Review (PS Vita)

This was one of the few games available on the Vita at launch and so far it’s been very very impressive. I’m going to break this review up into different parts.

The first thing I must say is that the motion sense steering is really difficult – it’s too sensitive and if you bang against the wall it’s really hard to get back on track. I had to change it to using the analogue stick, which works really well. The rest of the controls work as expected. I am still a little disappointed that my Vita’s right bumper is sometimes unresponsive, but hey-ho, that’s not the game’s fault. Controls: 6.5/10

The graphics on this game are exceptional, rivalled only by Uncharted: Golden Abyss on the Vita. You cannot fail but be impressed, and the smoothness of play is nearing perfection. It’s worth noting, however, that on certain game modes, with a lot of different things going on at once, I have experienced a couple of slow moments, but apart from that, amazing. Graphics: 9/10

Gameplay is pretty standard for a racing game, except that you do get to collect powerups and go over speed icons, both of which add to the excitement. The powerups you collect depends on the colour of the icon you passed and where you are in relation to the other racers. Overall it works nicely, with a basic ‘campaign mode’, which is in reality just a series of races and other quests. Gameplay: 8/10

Online Mode is a good feature on Wipeout, although it does require a provided network pass (unlike some racers on the Vita including Asphalt Injections) – so if you buy it second hand, you’ll likely miss out on online. Online is certainly the most different game mode, but sometimes it can get a bit confusing when playing a fighter race and you can’t find your opponents all race so you end up with 0 points… It’s also worth noting that you are able to instantly compare your race times with your friends and also the best in the world. A nice touch. Obviously online mode is more susceptible to lagging, that’s to be expected, but the graphics are identical to the main game. Online mode: 7.5/10

I haven’t had the chance to play Ad-hoc mode, so I can’t comment.

Overall, this is a very impressive racer and it isn’t the most expensive Vita title so I would definitely recommend an investment. Just make sure you don’t buy it preowned if you want to play online!

Overall: 8/10
